Chabad is technically neither. They are orthodox, but some people will then try to label them ultra-orthodox, but actually they're not part of OU, Orthodox Union, which is the mainstream modern orthodox represented by Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi David Lau in Jerusalem. But they are considered no less orthodox by the modern orthodox. Chabad is a mystical practice of Judaism which is based on reading the original Hebrew from original such as Rabbi Akiva. There are no exceptions, although unfortunately it has taken distorted paths such as Lurian Kabbalah, which may have began the corruption by Romans.
